Eagles of Death Metal, Camden KOKO London, 17.06.15

The Eagles of Death Metal make a bang at the London KOKO.

Eagles of Death Metal at the London KOKO, 17th June 2015Eagles of Death Metal hit London town on Wednesday night, settling down at the bottom of Camden Road in the famous KOKO theatre. News outlets may have mentioned this show already – it seems there were a few famous faces in the audience, but that’s a regular Wednesday night in the capital. So let’s step past this prevailing idea of “how to be cool” that seems to permeate the local area and take a look at the simplest thing there is in music: a damn good show played by an enthusiastic band to an eager audience.

This mini tour is hot on the heels of the announced release date of a new album “Zipper Down” (2nd of October) and its lead single, “Complexity”, a cover of a Jesse Hughes solo track (which can be found on 2011’s “Honkey Kong”, released under the moniker Boots Electric). But perhaps the biggest hype around the fans at the moment is Josh Homme taking his old place behind the Eagles of Death Metal drumkit, coolly smoking a cigarette during “I Only Want You” like it’s the most casual thing in the world, nonchalantly breaking UK laws in the process.

EODM’s set highlighted all three of their albums with over-the-top groove from start to finish. The band brought the California desert sound with “Whorehoppin’ (Shit Goddamn)”, a bit of sexiness in “I Only Want You” and “Speaking in Tongues”, and a tonne of awesome fun from “Don’t Speak (I Came to Make a Bang)”  – all great examples of the three key ingredients of the Eagles of Death Metal signature sound. Jesse Hughes struts around the stage, lapping up the audience’s attention and showing London how the whole rockstar act should be done: with a non-stop smile and outrageous dance moves. The London audience were treated to three new songs, including the previously mentioned Boots Electric cover (a slice of highly entertaining dance synth music), “The Reverend” and “Silverlake”.
